The How and Why of the Rezulin® Story
Every year the FDA performs drug studies and recalls those that appear dangerous. When a drug is responsible for the deaths of 63 people over the course of almost two and a half years, questions about blame are inevitable. In the case of Rezulin®, both the FDA and the drug's manufacturer, Warner-Lambert, failed to recall the drug despite cascading evidence of its deadliness. How and why this occurred is examined by Pulitzer-prize winning journalist David Willman in his article.

Rezulin®: A Deadly History
The diabetes drug Rezulin® has a history fraught with controversy. From its initial submission for review through its time on the market, Rezulin® was suspected to cause liver damage and other health problems. Misbin criticized the FDA for allowing Rezulin® to stay on the market despite its potential dangers. Now it seems that his push for action may rob him of his job.

Rezulin® Recalled At Last
Rezulin®, a diabetes drug linked to at least 63 deaths from liver failure, was recalled on March 21, 2000. The drug, originally "fast-tracked" for approval by the FDA, was not withdrawn until nearly two and half years after the first reported Rezulin-related death. Two newer diabetes drugs were found to be significantly safer, and Rezulin® was deemed to be the most dangerous diabetes drug available by Dr. David J. Graham, senior epidemiologist for the FDA.
